The Pediatric Residency Training Program at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is designed to help you achieve your goals and dreams in pediatrics.
Our Greatest Strength is Our People
While we are very proud of our program, of our clinical care and our educational
curriculum, we know that our greatest strength is our people. We strive to provide a
caring, nurturing and supportive environment to help you in your professional development.
Our residents exhibit a strong work ethic and curiosity, but even stronger camaraderie and
sense of group purpose. Our faculty are here to teach, and they do it well. They are mentors,
not supervisors, and they work to help meet the individual needs of each resident. Over half
of our Intern Selection Committee are housestaff, and residents are integral members of
important committees that drive not only the Residency Program, but also the Department of
Pediatrics. You will have a strong voice here.
Leaders in clinical medicine, whether it is in primary care in rural practice, or in subspecialty areas in academic centers; Leaders in advocacy within their communities; Leaders on the cutting edge of research. Ultimately, we strive to provide a balanced, well-rounded training program that will prepare you to meet the challenges that await.
We are based in the Children’s Hospital of New Mexico, a 141-bed tertiary care facility located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We are home to the only level 1 trauma center in the state, as well as the center for pediatric sub specialists in New Mexico. We have a busy Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit, and General Inpatient Service, as well as a dedicated hematology/oncology and Surgery ward.
As the only children's hospital in the state, we see an incredible variety of diagnoses. Tertiary and subspecialty care is only the beginning of the story, however. The Well-Child/Urgent Care clinic sees 45,000 children per year with everything from colds to meningitis. The Pediatric Emergency Department sees 9,000 children annually. Residents choose to have their weekly continuity clinic at the Health Sciences Center, or in the community. Our patients come from a wide area to see us, and comprise an incredibly diverse cultural mix, including many Hispanic and Native American families.
In June of 2007, we moved into our new state-of-the-art Children's Hospital and the Bill and Barbara Richardson Pavilion adjacent to our existing facility. This new hospital will include all new inpatient services, including a general pediatrics ward with 34-beds, a 20-bed hematology/oncology and specialty care unit, a 15-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, a 52-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit, and a 20-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Dedicated to the promotion of wellness for children and families throughout New Mexico, we offer training in community pediatric and pediatric advocacy through our PARC (Pediatric Advocacy, Rural and Community) curriculum. In their second year, all residents are given the opportunity to spend a month living in the small, rural community of Silver City, New Mexico, working with the dedicated pediatricians of Hidalgo Medical Services, a visionary community-based comprehensive health program.
