Pediatric Residency Program
Life After Residency
Shrena Patel, M.D. ::Fellowship
The Pediatric
Residency at UNM was a wonderful experience. The faculty are very
approachable and interested in teaching. The informal atmosphere makes
life so much easier! We had a lot of direct contact with primary and
subspecialty attendings. They make a point of giving us autonomy with
patients and providing backup when needed. I enjoyed working with the
students and off-service residents.
At the end of their training, graduates of our program have the world open to them. The
diversity and individual initiative that our housestaff bring to UNM is fostered here, and
it enables them to begin the careers of their choice.
Approximately 60 percent of our graduates enter primary care pediatrics in locations from
New Mexico to Montana to the East Coast. Of these, 40 percent of them practice in rural or
medically underserved settings.
The rest engage in a variety of post-residency training positions. Recent graduates who have
chosen to pursue fellowship training away from UNM have selected programs including Critical
Care at UCSF, the University of Washington, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Genetics at University of Utah
and Stanford University, and
Rheumatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. A number of them have chosen to stay with us
in our own fellowship programs in Neonatology, Pulmonology and Hematology/Oncology.
Winona Stoltzfus, M.D. :: Community Pediatrician
The training program at UNM did an excellent job of preparing me to work as a general
pediatrician for underserved Hispanic families in Albuquerque. I had the opportunity to do
a second continuity clinic during my second two years where I learned valuable skills, and
made the contacts that have helped me build my career on my terms.
My experiences during residency were invaluable towards helping me work in the community as
a physician and advocate.
