In your second year, you get to take what you learned in PARC I, and get out of town. Literally. Residents spend 1 month working in the small, rural community of Silver City New Mexico. Here, you will learn about rural medicine, about community resilience and development, about life outside the academic medical center, and about yourself.
During your away month, we provide housing in a fully furnished apartment (families welcome!). You will work side by side with the dedicated pediatricians and other health care providers at Hidalgo Medical Services as a community physician. Hidalgo Medical Services operates 5 community clinics and 2 school based clinics and they are the recognized leader in providing medical, dental, mental health and family support services for everyone in Hidalgo County and Southwestern New Mexico, as well as a national model for sustainable frontier health services and community development. Here you can see and do it all. Check out HMS’ Website, and info about Silver City:
You will spend 4 days per week working in the urgent care/well-child clinic. Here you will see common problems in a new context, as well as a variety of chronic and acute illnesses unique to the population. As a community physician, you will work with the team to manage complex pediatric patients away from the tertiary care center and the sub-specialists. You will round with the pediatricians at the community hospital, caring for newborns and inpatients. You take call as a member of the practice, one night per week and one weekend per month, with lots of backup and support.

One day per week will be spent doing home visits in the community with case managers, to continue the work you began in PARC I in community competence and assessment.

We recognize that not all residents will be able to leave Albuquerque for a month. For those who must stay due to family obligations, you will spend the month at the Albuquerque Indian Hospital working with the urban Indian community in the urgent care and well-child clinics as well as outreach clinics on nearby Pueblos.
