Department of Pediatrics
Residency Training Program
A Welcome from Teresa A. Vigil, MD
Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
We are dedicated to providing comprehensive, family-centered healthcare that is unequaled in
the state and region. Our multiple missions of patient care, research and teaching interact
seamlessly to create an outstanding resident experience.
The Children's Hospital of New Mexico provides a state of the art facility for our residency program.
We provide technologically advanced world-class care in all areas, from neonatology and emergency
and critical care, to primary care, all in a warm family and child-centered environment.
No matter where you train, residency is a lot of work. The philosophy of the program and the quality
of your teachers and peers can make all the difference. Our goal is to help you achieve your dreams
in pediatrics, whether they lie in primary care or as a subspecialist, in a large hospital or a
small community. Our promise is to guide you through the rigors of training in a compassionate
and challenging curriculum designed to help you become the best pediatrician possible.
Our commitment to your education extends from the clinic to the classroom. Our innovative Thursday
Resident School provides a fun and collegial venue for our didactic and interactive curriculum.
Every single resident attends, and our entire residency family spends the afternoon together engaged
in lectures, hands-on simulation teaching and interactive learning activities completely free of any
clinical duties. We'll even answer your pages for you, so you can focus on the learning at hand!
Programs unique to the University of New Mexico include the Program in Advocacy, Rural and Community
Pediatrics, known as PARC, and the Child Health International Program. We are committed to the principles
of community advocacy, and strongly believe that our responsibilities as physicians extend beyond the walls
of our clinics and hospitals. We want to help you become effective advocates for the well-being of your
patients by teaching skills necessary to empower you to work to improve the health status of children
in Albuquerque, in New Mexico, and beyond. Our residents and our program have won multiple awards for
our pioneering approach to changing the world for the better. It is indeed who we are and what we do,
every day.
We are proud of the work that our residents provide to the children and families of New Mexico. With a
conscious focus on education and professionalism, our residents gain world-class experience while providing
the children of New Mexico with the best care possible. We hope that you will consider applying to our
program, and learning more about how the University of New Mexico can help you achieve great things.
