Background
Physicians have the potential to have a major impact on public health. They can help in the achievement of the two most important population health goals for New Mexico:
- Improve the health status of New Mexicans
- Reduce health disparities
Providing excellent medical care is an important goal for a medical student. In order to achieve lasting and meaningful progress in improving health and reducing disparities, physicians need additional knowledge and skills to work as partners with community stakeholders and within a public health systems model, applying population-based approaches. For this reason, the University of New Mexico has incorporated a population health component in the medical curriculum. Completing this curricular component confers the Public Health Certificate.
The Public Health Certificate Program is a 17-credit program for Residents, Fellows, Faculty and New Mexico Physicians, focusing on public health core concepts including:
- Principles of Public Health for Clinicians
- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Community Project
- Health Policy
- Elective
