Professional Development:

Purpose
To provide a venue for the UNM Prevention Research Center’s (PRC’s) faculty and staff, colleagues, and community partners to build capacity for prevention research. Presentations will focus on specific topic areas relevant to our goal of expanding our prevention research, knowledge, and skills. Additionally, presentations will serve as an opportunity for interaction and mutual learning among researchers and practitioners. Example topics include research methodology, epidemiology, survey design, measurement, public health, advocacy, and communications.

Professional Development Series: Conducting Survey Research
Surveys are one of the most common research strategies used to answer health-related questions and lengthy textbooks have been written about survey methods. This talk will provide an overview of key features of strong survey design and implementation. Dr. Beth Tigges has developed and conducted several N.I.H.-funded school-based surveys of adolescents and been the Co-Investigator for the N.I.H.-funded National Children's Study, a community-based survey study, in Valencia County for the past five years. She is the Director of Tracking and Evaluation for the UNM HSC Clinical and Translation Science Center. (See PDF flier)

We will discuss how qualitative and quantitative research can be used together and why you might want to use mixed methods in your work. We will examine the structure, process and function of mixed methods and provide examples of common patterns for discussion.
