Full HIA report on increasing pedestrian safety on U.S. 550 available from the UNM Prevention Research Center. A Health Impact Assessment or HIA is a tool that communities can use to estimate the effect of a policy, program or project on the health of community residents. The Step Into Cuba Alliance asked for the UNM Prevention Research Center's assistance in conducting a "rapid" HIA of potential roadway and sidewalk improvements along U.S. 550. At the direction of an Alliance subcommittee, a summary of the HIA was distributed in Cuba as an insert in the May 2010 edition of the Cuba News. The HIA summary and the full HIA document provides information about the positive effects safety improvements to U.S. 550 --- such as median islands, buffer zones, street lighting --- could have on the health and safety of the residents and visitors as well as on the economy of Cuba. The full HIA report was shared with the NM Department of Transportation to help inform U.S. 550 improvement projects. HIA Summary (1.5 mgs) | HIA Full Report (1.2 mgs)
