Current Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) Research Project
Our project was conducted from mid-summer to the end of 2007
Four Practice Based Research Networks (CaReNet, RIOS Net, SERCN & SPUR-Net) participated in the survey
Over 110 personal digital assistant (PDA) devices were distributed to clinicians thru out the United States
Data collection phase captured 1600+ patient history records, ages 22 - 65 years old, from various ethnicities
In the later stages of the project, blood samples were collected from selected individuals who were deemed
to have AN symptoms & control individuals who was matched based on agreed criteria for further research
As a result of participation in the RIOS Net DPP I project and AN training CME, it was learned in the first phase of this project that nearly 80% of
those who took part in the previous RIOS Net project reported that they now were frequently looking for signs of AN in patients they saw. After
seeing those signs of AN, over half said they were more likely to inquire about diabetes risk factors with their patients.
