History
CaReNet, a leader in PBRN research in this country, is based at the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine.
In the late 1970s, faculty members of the Department were instrumental in forming the Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network,
one of the first and most highly respected PBRNs in this country. In 1998, the Department of Family Medicine formed the
Colorado Research Network (CaReNet), specifically to conduct research with traditionally underrepresented populations.
CaReNet’s mission
“To improve health and well-being by the application of scientific methods to questions important
to primary care clinicians, their patients, and their communities.”
Early development of CaReNet was supported by grants from AHRQ and HRSA to increase the size, capacity,
and productivity of the network, while fostering interdisciplinary research.
