Center for Infectious Disease & Immunity
Post-Doctoral Fellowship
Infectious Disease & Inflammation Training Program
Minimum criteria for consideration of a trainee for admission into IDIP:
-
Postdoc holds a PhD and/or a MD and is committed to working under an
IDIP training-faculty member. See the CIDI members page for a list of eligible
faculty and a description of their programs.
-
Postdoc is able and willing to take some coursework: (A) a
not-for-credit Immunopathogenesis course and/or other relevant course to
IDIP; (B) Problem-based Research Bioethics (1 credit) and receive a
grade no lower than a "B" unless they have already received credit for
essentially equivalent coursework in their previous training.
-
Postdoc is willing to submit an NRSA, ALA, or equivalent individual
training grant application at the end of their first year of IDIP
fellowship. If the applicant is more advanced, a transitional grant
application to independence is also acceptable and indeed encouraged.
-
Postdoc will agree to meet other requirements specified in "Specifics of
Postdoctoral Training Requirements." These include the convening at
least twice per year of a committee on studies of no less than 3 UNM
faculty members (which need not include entirely tenured or tenure-track
faculty members) and meeting the requirements for attendance and
participation in journal clubs, presentations at national and university
seminars. For VERY EXPERIENCED MENTORS, the requirements for a committee
on studies might be waived.
-
Postdoc must be a citizen or noncitizen national.
Individuals on temporary visas are not eligible.
Application requirements:
-
A 1-2 page description of research already accomplished in the mentor's
laboratory and future plans for moving on into the next stage of your
career. In addition, an abstract of paper(s) in preparation, if
applicable.
-
A one-page essay written by the postdoc describing career goals after
completion of her/his current PDF and why he/she wishes to be an IDIP
fellow.
-
Updated curriculum vitae.

Letter of support from PI and one other faculty member (within or
outside of UNM) who is familiar with the candidate's work. Faculty who
write letters of support will be ineligible to serve on the selection
committee.

addition, an abstract of paper(s) in preparation, if applicable.

Detailed training record by mentor indicating success of former trainees
-
Hiring plan.
Training grant benefits and requirements
The benefits of the fellowship in the IDIP training grant include the
prestige of having won a competitive grant award, and having your stipend
paid, which frees up your PI's resources. There will be an allowance for
tuition, as well as a generous allowance for training expenses and a budget
for travel to meetings.
Per the NIH/NRSA guidelines for postdoctoral trainees, stipends are
provided as a subsistence allowance to help defray living expenses during
the research training experience. It is not provided as a condition of
employment with either the University of New Mexico or the Federal
government. Health insurance, including dental and vision coverage are
supported by the grant. However, costs that normally would be associated
with employee benefits (FICA, workmen's compensation and unemployment
insurance) are not allowed.
