Geriatric psychiatry encompasses more general internal medicine than other psychiatric specialties. Fellows have opportunities to work with the Division of Geriatric medicine in inpatient, outpatient and home visit venues.
House calls allow physicians to interact with the patient, family and caregivers in their natural environment and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the physical and psychosocial circumstances. Fellows can participate in medical and psychiatric home based care.
There are two million chronically homebound patients. Elderly patients often prefer care at home. Home based care was thought to be a relic. However, medical technology, funding structures and community need have created a viable, untapped practice opportunity.
Per the American Academy of Home Care Physicians, the cost of homecare is significantly lower when compared to hospital visits, emergency room procedures, or ambulance transportation. In addition, care management systems including house calls have demonstrated the ability to reduce hospital and ER admissions and re-admissions, average lengths of stay, and to reduce nursing home admissions.
Fellows will have an opportunity to work with the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Senior Clinic Home care, and home hospice. Experiences includes management of patients in their homes, interdisciplinary team efficiency and home based practice logistics.
