“In general, physicians find nursing home work unappealing because they, too, equate giving care with treatment; all of their training has told them so. Medical treatment can often be both fruitful and rewarding. Still it is not the same as taking care.
Taking care is different from providing treatment. It is an act that carries its own demands, challenges and rewards. Trying to judge care by measuring the number and effectiveness of treatments is like trying to identify colors with a yardstick.
Unbelievably, for the first time in my career, I was searching for the answer to the question: “What does it mean to take care of another person?”

Nursing Home Rotation
The nursing home rotation allows residents to evaluate and manage nursing home patients. Manzano Del Sol Good Samaritan Nursing Facility is the primary venue. In addition to developing the art of “taking care” of people, fellows will provide ongoing management of stable patients in LTC settings, recognize signs of deterioration, and provide appropriate care plans. Fellows provide education regarding psychiatric disorders to physicians of other services, treatment team members, patients and their families.
Faculty includes Dr. Apfeldorf MD PhD, and Anne Simpson MD
