Overview
Welcome to Psychiatry!
As a
student you will spend 4 weeks as part of an inpatient treatment team under
the supervision of an attending psychiatrist and one or more residents. This
will take place on an inpatient service at either the UNM Mental Health
Center or the VA Medical Center. One afternoon per week will be spent on an
ambulatory service.
On Call
As it is
important to observe, evaluate, and manage psychiatric disorders in the
acute state, each student will be "on-call" two nights (one week night and
one weekend night) during the clerkship. Call takes place from 5:00 pm until
10:00 pm under the supervision of the psychiatry resident and attending
psychiatrist in conjunction with the emergency (PES) psychiatry staff.
Students are there to learn and will not be placed in any situations for
which they have not been trained or prepared.
Assessment
Overall
grades will be determined using the following percentages:
•
50%
clinical evaluations of faculty and residents
•
25%
interactive presentations, quiz and practical exam
•
25%
written psychiatry board-type examination
Other Activities
Each
Wednesday morning (~8:00 am - noon) is devoted to interactive presentations
involving core psychiatry topics. These experiences are geared toward
preparing students to deal with psychiatric disorders as they
are encountered in primary care practice. Relevant and interesting topics
that arise within each particular clerkship may also be explored. Students
are encouraged to attend the Departmental Conference Series
(Psychiatry Grand Rounds) on Friday mornings from 11:00 to 12:00.
Resources
Students
are required to have an appropriate and recent textbook of psychiatry at
their disposal. Many of you have already purchased Kaplan and Sadock's
"Synopsis of Psychiatry" for Phase I. This is a comprehensive
and up-to-date book, which will serve you well in the clerkship. At
orientation on the first day of the clerkship, we will review a number of
other recommended texts that will be available at the bookstore. We also
have a wide array of "board preparation" texts and videotapes which you may
wish to check out of our "Medical Student Education Library."
