Geriatric Research

  Geriatric / Alzheimer’s Research Overview

The Geriatric Research Group is led by Dr. William Apfeldorf. Conducting geriatric research in the state of New Mexico offers many unique opportunities. New Mexico’s over-65 population will soon exceed the national average. Its ethnic diversity, which includes 19 Native American pueblos, 2 Apache nations and the Navajo Nation each with a rich tribal history and culture, provides unique opportunities in Native American and rural subspecialty healthcare.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease that affects roughly 5 million people in the U.S. Some symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include forgetfulness, confusion, trouble organizing or expressing thoughts and changes in personality and behavior. Alzheimer’s often gets worse over time, but some treatments may help slow and/or reduce the devastating effects of the illness. It is a difficult illness for those suffering and for caregivers to cope with. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential.
