Welcome to the UNM child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship website. I hope that you would strongly consider applying to our program.

First, training here provides good preparation for multiple career opportunities after your training is over. We see high acuity patients from all over the state and have ample opportunity to do both inpatient and outpatient medication management. We also get the opportunity to do family and individual psychotherapy in the outpatient setting, in a residential treatment setting and in an acute setting. If psychotherapy is a particularly interest to you, even more time can be devoted to that during your 2nd year of fellowship. We have the opportunity to travel to rural sites to do clinic and also have exposure to telepsychiatry. We are also working on expanding our research opportunities for fellows and work to provide extra time for fellows who have a particular interest in research.

Secondly, I think our program offers a good balance between work and home life. We get a lot of support from the general psychiatry program and staff here at Children’s psychiatric center for handling evening and weekend emergencies and admissions. Our call is home call and a faculty member is always available to you if you have questions. This provides the fellows with opportunities for free time in the evenings and on weekends which is important for your own mental health.

Thirdly, this is a nice place to live. The weather is beautiful and sunny with mild winters. New Mexico has a lot of natural beauty and a unique culture. Albuquerque is an affordable city to live in and fellows can find nice places to live within reasonable driving distance of the hospital. One of my personal favorite events is the international balloon fiesta, which takes place every October. It is a chance to see hundreds of hot air balloons taking off together, which is an amazing sight.

So you if are looking for a fellowship that offers comprehensive training, a good balance between work and personal life, and a good environment to live in, I think you should consider checking out our program. If you have any further questions, I would be happy to have you contact me by email.
