My interests are diverse and range from psychopharmacology to spirituality and are centered on teaching.  I am the director of the consultation services at the VA hospital where enjoy helping senior residents learn to integrate medicine, psychiatry, and ethics. I also teach ethics and professionalism in the medical school and religion and ethics in the religious studies program at the University of New Mexico. My clinical work is in the areas of mood and substance use disorders, psychosomatic medicine and chronic pain. My scholarly focus is also reflects my renaissance approach to psychiatry and is best captured in the Psychiatry Times columns I have been privileged to write for nearly a decade. Work is really my life, but I do have the great honor of living with my amazing 85-year old mother and my Akita, Kira. Once upon a time I was a chaplain, a long distance athlete and a rock and roll musician.
