CANIVE,
M.D. |
M.D., Universidad Complutense, Madrid, 1966 e-mail: jmcanmd@unm.edu Description of clinical interests and expertise: My clinical interests include the phenomenology, pathophysiology and treatment of schizophrenia and PTSD. I am also interested in the access and utilization of mental health services and existing ethnic disparities. Description of educational and personal interests: To mentor medical students, graduate students, residents and junior faculty in their research careers. I love the Fine Arts, especially music. I enjoy playing the piano and singing, and derive great pleasure listening to classical and Latin music. Going to a museum or an art exhibition is enthralling. Description of scholarly and research interests: After completing my residency training I worked mostly as a clinician in Vancouver, Canada. In 1978 I decided to move to New Mexico with two main goals in mind: (1) to provide services to Hispanic populations; and (2) to pursue and academic career. I initially worked at one of UNM's Mental Health Center satellite clinics and eventually became Director of the Outpatient Division. I was initially attracted by the field of Cultural Psychiatry and then became fascinated by the new family psychoeducational interventions in schizophrenia and the work of the late Ian Falloon. This led me to spend a sabbatical year at my Alma Mater, Madrid's Universidad Complutense, to adapt Falloon's psychoeducational intervention to people from a different ethnic background. Soon after my return from Madrid I published a few articles on my work and became involved in industry sponsored clinical trials in schizophrenia. In 1991 I moved to the VA as Director of the PTSD Program. Since then my research endeavors have flourished in different ways through: (1) Participating in numerous multicenter clinical trials, investigator initiated studies and real-world, practical trials such as the NIMH sponsored Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE); (2) Examining sensory gating in schizophrenia with magentoencephalography (MEG); (3) Investigating the barriers to mental health care among minority veterans (a joined project with Joseph Westermeyer at the Minneapolis VA); (4) Determining the prevalence of pathological gambling among veterans receiving primary care at two VAMCs (a joined project with Joseph Westermeyer at the Minneapolis VA). The most satisfactory part of my activities has been to mentor graduate students, research fellows and junior faculty and successfully help them obtain Industry Sponsored Investigator Initiated Studies, NARSAD and NIMH funding. I am currently Principal Investigator on a VA MERIT and on an NIMH R01 to further examine the neural substrates of the sensory gating phenomenon. I am also PI on two VA cooperative studies, an NIMH funded clinical trial, several Investigator Initiated Studies and Industry Sponsored Clinical Trials.
