R. Gregory (Greg) Franchini, M.D. Associate Professor Emeritus
Areas of Specialization: Medical student education; well-being of medical students, residents and physicians; sports psychiatry; and “mindfulness” as applied to psychotherapy, stress-reduction and life Email: gfranchini@salud.unm.edu As a psychiatrist and medical educator for the past 25 years, I have experienced a number of transitions in my concept of my profession and in my role as a helper. At the present time I am fortunate to be able to focus most of my time and efforts toward the education, mentoring and training of medical students and residents. Though I was initially trained in a predominantly psychoanalytic approach to understanding and helping people, over time this naturally expanded to a much more eclectic and active clinical practice. While medication has been a true blessing for many, others have never realized its promise of cure or substantial benefit. Years of professional and life experiences have helped me realize that true change and growth comes through working with the individual rather than working on him or her. I try to apply this concept in clinical, educational and everyday interactions. Selected Publications: Franchini G: Some comments on closing (An exploration of the termination process).
