Dr. Irene Ortiz holds an M.S.W. from the University of California, Berkeley and graduated from medical school at Michigan State University and then came to UNM for her psychiatry residency followed by a research fellowship in psychoimmunolgy. In 1991 she joined the faculty in Department of Psychiatry as an attending psychiatrist assigned to the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS). Her research areas have included psychoimmunology, cultural issues, depression and dementia in the elderly. She is board-certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) since 1991. She currently serves on the Geropsychiatry Committee of the ABPN. From 2000 to 2004 she served on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Psychopharmacology Drugs Advisory Committee participating on pharmacologic and public health discussions related to antidepressant and antipsychotic medications. Since its inception she has been active in the UNM BA/MD program. As a former social worker her interest in interdisciplinary teaching led to her active involvement with the UNM Geriatric Education Center where she lectured frequently to interdisciplinary audiences. Dr. Ortiz’s clinical practice at the NMVAHCS is primarily focused on older veterans and their geropsychiatric needs.
