Our program attracts motivated, intellectually curious residents who are eager to join a collaborative program that values clinical and educational excellence. We offer ample teaching from world-recognized faculty members, continue to emphasize the importance of both somatic and psychotherapeutic treatments, and allow trainees the opportunity to train and live in a beautiful, scenic and exciting Southwest environment. You owe yourself the favor of exploring what UNM has to offer.

Our program prides itself on attracting outstanding young physicians who are committed to participating in an excellent training experience in psychiatry, and in making a difference in providing service to underserved populations. Our clinical facilities feature a wide array of patient populations including culturally diverse populations drawn from community-based programs and our university community. Our fellowships in child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and addiction psychiatry together with strong training in biological and psychosocial research, forensic psychiatry and what is likely the nation’s best program in rural, open many doors and assure that our graduates are prepared to pursue all avenues of contemporary clinical, academic, and administrative psychiatry in a variety of settings. Our strong emphasis in functional Neuroimaging has opened new avenues for investigation and careers for recent graduates. The University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine has long been recognized internationally as a center for innovation in Medical Education. The Department of Psychiatry shares this commitment to educational excellence as we provide the highest quality of graduate medical education to our psychiatry residents and fellows. Our large, talented and diverse faculty includes clinicians and researchers involved with all aspects of psychiatry. Among the senior faculty who are heavily involved in resident teaching are world renowned psychiatrists including Drs. Sam Keith, Jan Fawcett, Joel Yager, George Nurnberg, and Eberhard Uhlenhuth. At the University of New Mexico Department of Psychiatry our all-star faculty members actually work directly with our residents in both clinical supervision and didactic settings.
