Clinical Resources
The UNM Psychiatric Center is the centerpiece around which clinical activities are organized. It typifies the community mental health center model and offers a rich diversity of patients. The hospital division consists of 47 beds: two general acute adult units and a 15 bed geriatric unit. There are also, a 24-hour psychiatric emergency service, a full range of adult outpatient services, an ambulatory substance abuse program, a rape crisis clinic, and a children's outpatient program. The Department conducts psychiatric consultation and liaison activities in the University of New Mexico Hospital, an acute general hospital of 384 beds.

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry operates a model 53 bed, cottage-style Children's Psychiatric Hospital, an adolescent inpatient unit, a psychiatric consultation service in the Department of Pediatrics, and the outpatient Programs for Children. The local Child Guidance Clinic also is affiliated with the Division. The programs of the Child and Adolescent Division provide residents with the opportunity to treat children of all ages and with a diversity of psychiatric and social problems.
The New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System (NMVAHCS), which in an Affiliate of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, includes 24 psychiatric beds which support an acute general psychiatry program, a transitional program, a specialized post traumatic stress disorders program, an substance use disorders program, an outstanding psychiatric consultation service and a variety of additional outpatient clinical settings. The VAMC provides residents the opportunity to work with outstanding Department of Psychiatry VA-Based Faculty caring for veterans in a broad array of clinical settings.

Rural psychiatry experiences are available in the fourth year. These ambulatory care settings are developed throughout New Mexico and offer clinical and community systems experience.

The Department also has a network of contacts with the Indian Health Service, the Bernalillo County Detention Center, the Las Vegas (NM) State Hospital, and public and private psychiatric clinics and hospitals throughout the State.
