The goals of the research program in the UNM Department of Psychiatry are to create new tools for understanding and treating mental illness; to find better outcomes for individuals with mental illnesses; and to decrease the burden of mental illness on families, communities and society as a whole.

The research opportunities within our department focus on three main components:

  • Developing new medications and behavioral therapies through clinical treatment research
  • Using neuroimaging to study the effects of illness and treatment on the brain
  • Developing and using a variety of culturally appropriate methods for community-based services research involving treatment, prevention, and training, with an emphasis on rural and Native American communities, and the public behavioral health system

Diagnoses include:

  • Serious Mental Illness such as schizophrenia and other psychoses
  • Alcohol and drug use disorders
  • Serious Emotional Disturbances
  • Other psychiatric disorders
