Medical Student Clerkships

The Department of Radiology is pleased to offer 4-week student rotations at the UNM Health Sciences Center.The objective of the rotations is to provide an introduction to the medical specialty of diagnostic radiology and familiarize the student with the range of imaging modalities and procedures available within the field. In so doing, the student will gain an understanding of the ever-increasing importance of imaging in patient diagnosis and management.

This will be achieved by a multi-task approach:

• First, the student will read the standard of introductory textbooks available today on imaging, Essentials of Radiology, authored by the department chairman.
• The student will observe the spectrum of procedures performed by our state-of-the-art radiology department. Following that, the student will spend time in each subdivision observing interpretive sessions. Medical students can expect to be present from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on weekdays and are not required to work on-call shifts.
• The student will be expected to attend relevant didactic and case review conferences during the course of the month.
• Finally, the student will be expected to prepare a small number of short case presentations to be discussed in group format during the last week of the rotation.
