UNM Radiology benefits from the association of several academic hospitals. The department performs examinations at three fully integrated facilities and a unified faculty teaches the residents.
University of New Mexico Hospital
is a fully accredited 368-bed primary teaching facility.
It is the state's only Level I Trauma Center and houses the Regional
Burn Center and the Children's
Hospital of New Mexico. The 212,000 square foot, five-story
Ambulatory Care Center opened in 1991 and houses more than 60 specialty
clinics. University Hospital is equipped with the latest imaging technology
including four spiral Siemens CT scanners including one 16 slice and
one 10 slice scanner,
state of the art ultrasound equipment, three
Philips digital fluoroscopy machines, as well as two Siemens
1.5 Tesla MRI units. Radiology is fully digital with 20 Fuji CR readers
and a new all digital radiographic x-ray room. We plan to add CR mammography
when it is FDA approved to compliment the R2 CAD mammography system.
The hospital also has a fully integrated Philips PACS with the Cerner
HIS/RIS system. Nuclear Medicine has two multi-head Philips gamma
cameras, a single head Siemens high resolution gamma camera and a
new Siemens PET/CT (16 slice) unit.
The Interventional Radiology suite houses Philips bi-plane and single plane angiography systems. UNMH has a 60,000+ square foot Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Service center. The imaging center accepts patients for outpatient MRI, CT, US, and mammography. Radiology also reads films for a number of UNM based outpatient radiology imaging offices.
UNMH is in the process of building a new ED and Pediatric edition to the hospital. This addition includes an new radiology department to support the ED. This department includes a new MRI unit, 2 new Multi-slice CT scanners, two radiographic x-ray rooms and miscellaneous ultrasound and portable x-ray equipment to support the pediatric services. Expected completion of this addition is late 2007.
Founded
in 1937, Carrie
Tingley Hospital (CTH) is an integral part of the University of
New Mexico Health Sciences Center and is located two blocks from University
Hospital. CTH is primarily a pediatric orthopedic hospital.
Children from throughout the state with musculoskeletal abnormalities
are referred to CTH for diagnosis and treatment. Pediatric radiologists
within the Department of Radiology provide radiologic consultation
for CTH.
While it is not uncommon for a teaching hospital to be affiliated with a
Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), UNM has the advantage of an
affiliation with the New
Mexico VA Healthcare System medical center that includes the VAMC
and U.S. Air Force Hospital - Kirtland. The hospital is a modern
246-bed facility that has several new imaging devices, including a
1.5 Tesla Marconi Edge MRI, Lunar DPXL Bone Densitometer, Philips
Integris interventional radiology suite, Siemens Sireskop digital
fluoroscopy suite, Siemens Somaton Plus helical CT Scanner, Marconi
PQ-6000 helical CT scanner, Marconi Norstar 0.23 Tesla Outlook open
MRI Unit, and a Marconi Neuromag 122 MEG System. Two Marconi
IRIX triple-head SPECT cameras with coincidence detection circuitry
for PET imaging have been installed recently. Picture archiving
and communication systems (PACS) has been installed in the radiology
department, and is currently running on all modalities.
TheThe Mind Institute is a unique facility that was created under the auspices of University Hospital, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Air Force, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The institute operates as a division of the Radiology Service. Through the collaborative efforts of neuroscientists, biophysicists, and clinicians, The Mind Institute provides exceptional patient care and conducts some of the most advanced neurological research in the world. This linkage of scientific and clinical approaches enables the center to provide rapid feedback on the clinical utility of newly developed imaging modalities.
