Welcome to the University of New Mexico Department of Radiology. Based in Albuquerque, the
University of New Mexico was founded in 1889. The School of Medicine was established
in 1964 and is nationally recognized for academic excellence, outstanding research,
and
teaching innovations.
While our clinical caseload is large and diverse, and our research strong, it is our unique approach to teaching that sets us apart from other academic centers. Our unique five-year Categorical Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program integrates the clinical year required by the American Board of Radiology. Five positions will be available for the 2008 match. The program encompasses all aspects of diagnostic radiology with seminars, lectures, conferences, and a variety of clinical patient experiences. We strive to provide an atmosphere that fosters progressive academic success, diverse practical clinical experience, and humanistic balance for each resident.
The program is nationally known for providing challenging rotations, well-organized teaching blocks, research opportunities, and individualized instruction. Radiology residents acquire a thorough education in radiological concepts and gain practical experience in providing quality radiological services, preparing them for successful and fulfilling careers in hospitals, teaching institutions, and private practice.
Our program provides early hands-on training, supplemented with monthly teaching blocks in all aspects of diagnostic radiology. The clinical year is structured to allow residents to select clinical rotations that will provide maximum benefit in meeting their individual professional objectives.
The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The dedicated faculty and carefully designed curriculum ensures that residents are well prepared for the American Board of Radiology certification examination. Our residents perform extraordinarily well on both written oral board examinations, and upon graduation, further their training in a variety of fellowships at competitive institutions. Learning is centered in a collegial, low key environment surrounded by faculty that place a premium not only on learning but also on "quality of life."
New Mexico provides residents with many different cultural and outdoor activities. Albuquerque is located along the banks of the Rio Grande in the heart of the desert southwest. The climate is moderate throughout the year with four distinct seasons and over 300 days of sunshine annually.
Applicants from U.S. and Canadian medical schools, as well as qualified international medical students, are given the opportunity to visit our department for one month elective medical student rotations. This opportunity gives the applicant first-hand knowledge of our program, as well as allows them to develop personal relationships with residents and attending radiologists.
