Before you decide to take part in a research study, you should discuss the study with the study doctor, your regular doctor, and your family and friends. The information on this page may help you in making your decision.

Concerns or Complaints about a Current UNM study?

 If you have questions, concerns or complaints regarding a human research study at the University of New Mexico, please contact us through one of the following:

• Call the Human Research Protections Office at 272-1129 (ask for the Operations Manager, or HRRC Executive Chair)
• Send a letter or memo to the Human Research Protections Office:

• Send an E-mail to the HRPO.
• Contact the HSC Compliance Hotline at 1-888-899-6092 (Calls can be made anonymously)

Education about Research for Potential Participants

• Get Research Smart - A web site that provides basic information to potential research subjects to assist them in making decisions about whether to participate in research studies.
• Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups - Has abundant education about cancer clinical trials
• Entering a Clinical Trial: Is it Right for You - An excellent and honest, 20 minute video.  There are 3 ways to access the video.  Download from the website (can take from 30 minutes or more to download depending on your internet speed); Order a DVD copy of the video; Make an appointment to view it at the HRRC Office.
• CISCRP - the Center for Information & Study on Clinical Research Participation.  A non-profit organization dedicated to educating and informing the public about clinical research participation
• Understanding Clinical Trials - What does each Phase entail? - A great explanation from the Cancer Research UK Organization on the different phases of a clinical trial.
• The Society for Women's Health Research - The nation's only non-profit organization aimed at improving the health of all women through research, education, and advocacy.
• Understanding the Child Assent Process - The National Cancer Institute has guides and information on child assent process.
• A Guide for American Indian/Alaska Native Communities - This resource guide was developed to help American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tribal leaders and community members make informed decisions about genetics research participation. A number of tools and resources have been developed especially for AI/AN communities.
