School of Medicine Research Allocation Committee (RAC)

Eligible Project Categories

A. Proposals Submitted by New Investigators

New investigators are individuals in their first 12-18 months as faculty with primary appointments in the School of Medicine (SOM) or SOM faculty who have never received funding from RAC. Award amount is currently limited to $25,000 or less.

  • RAC funding is restricted to regular faculty in the SOM who have at least a 0.5 FTE position. We will also consider applications from staff who hold a Letter of Academic Title. We do not provide funding for adjunct or visiting professors. Exceptions to these guidelines must be approved by the Senior Associate Dean of Research in the SOM.

B. Interim Funding Requests

Previously funded and peer reviewed proposals that have not been renewed but received a critique that suggests a strong probability for successful reapplication. Proposals of this type must be accompanied by the external agency's grant application with the written critiques, applicant's summary of revisions made to meet the reviewer's critiques, cover letter, and statement in the budget page indicating which portion(s) of the revised external application will be funded through the proposed RAC application. Award amount is currently limited to $25,000 or less.

C. Peer Reviewed Proposals Not Funded by an External Agency

Peer reviewed proposals that have been reviewed by an external funding agency, received a strong recommendation but were not funded.

D. Development Proposals/Pilot Projects

These are defined as proposals that represent a new direction for the investigator, a new approach to a research problem, or a project grant of broad interest to the School of Medicine involving multiple investigators. Award amount is currently limited to $25,000 or less.

E. Matching Funding for Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scientists

Proposals in this category must include a description of the proposal including the role of the individual for whom funding is requested and biosketches for that individual and the PI. An equal cost match from external or other funding sources will be required and should be documented in the proposal (Other Support section). Funds requested from RAC will be limited to $15,000 and will not be renewable.

NOTE: Funding is limited to one year. Extensions will be granted only in extenuating circumstances
