Biomedical Research Education Program : UNM Health Sciences Center

Academic Science Education & Research Training (ASERT)
Program for Postdoctoral Fellows

The Academic Science Education and Research Training (ASERT) program for postdoctoral fellows provides three years of support to fellows wishing to achieve excellence as both educators and research scientists in biology, bioengineering, and biomedical sciences. It is one of only a few NIGMS IRACDA (Institutional Research and Career Development Award;) programs in the country, which aim to increase the number of minority science faculty nationally and to stimulate undergraduate interest in, and access to, research-oriented science careers. ASERT capitalizes on the outstanding interdisciplinary research opportunities and internationally recognized educational resources at the University of New Mexico. Trainees enhance job competitiveness by developing an individualized learning plan that allows completion of courses or training tailored to their career goals as well as hands-on teaching experience with outstanding education mentors at partner minority-serving institutions across New Mexico (CNM and NMSU; tribal college partnerships in development). See a sample timeline for three years of ASERT activities

ASERT Fellows spend 25% time on educational enrichment and teaching and 75% time on cutting edge research questions. Funds for travel to scientific meetings, research and educational supplies, and tuition are provided.

Health Science Center postdoctoral fellows not in the ASERT-IRACDA program may participate in the program with agreement of their research mentors. In such cases, fellows may gain teaching experience through numerous opportunities at UNM.
