Before you begin the admission process, please review the information below.

Who should use this application?

If you have never applied to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, begin by Applying to UNM online or with a paper application through the Office of Graduate Studies(online is preferred). Follow all instructions for submitting the UNM application. Official GRE scores must be sent from ETS in New Jersey directly to UNM using institution code 4845 and department code 0609.International students must also have official TOEFL scores sent from ETS in New Jersey directly to UNM using institution code 4845 and department code 45.Transcripts from each institution attended must be sent to the BREP office.

Then the second step of the process requires specific information to be submitted directly to our program through the BSGP Online Application system.After you have paid the application fee and submitted all transcripts and test scores, and UNM has processed the documents required by the University, the Office of Admissions will release your application to the BSGP for review. When the BSGP receives your application from the University, you will be invited to submit your BSGP Online Application.

If you were enrolled in UNM in the past or had previously applied to another graduate department at UNM, you are still considered a first time applicant and must complete a new application.

If you applied for admission to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program last year, you must submit a new application, pay the application fee, and provide all required materials. You must meet all current deadlines and requirements; make sure that your GRE or other required tests are currently valid.

International applicants apply through the International Admissions website. International students should also send official transcripts, diplomas and certificates of graduation in the original language and official English translation to the BSGP office; documents must bear the original stamps, seals, and signatures of the issuing institution's designated officials.Official TOEFL scores sent from ETS in New Jersey to UNM (institution code 4845, department code 45).

To apply for admission to Non-Degree status visit the application page and select non-degree student. Please read all sections of the application to determine if you are eligible to apply for non-degree status.

If you are a new student applying to the MD/PhD Program with UNM School of Medicine, applicants need to begin with submission of the AMCAS application (the deadline is November 15 of each year). It must specify that the application is for the combined MD/PhD degree program. Then applicants need to complete the statement of purpose form and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted on their behalf on this form. The letters need to address past research and clinical experience, potential for a future scientific career and unique qualifications of the applicant for the MD/PhD program. All statement of purpose forms and letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the BREP office.

If you are a first, second or third year medical student applying to the MD/PhD Program with UNM School of Medicine, applicants need to applicants need to Complete the Medical Student MD/PhD Application form (the deadline is November 15). Deliver this form to the UNM Undergraduate Medical Education Office in BMSB 114. Then applicants need to complete the statement of purpose form and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted on their behalf on this form. The letters need to address past research and clinical experience, potential for a future scientific career and unique qualifications of the applicant for the MD/PhD program. All statement of purpose forms and letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the BREP office.

All materials submitted in support of your application become the property of the University and will not be returned to you.

Release of Information

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT

What is FERPA?

FERPA is the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act of 1974, it protects the privacy student records. It was designed to:

  • Allow students who are either 18 or attend a postsecondary institution access to their education records

  • Limit the transferability of a student’s records without the individual’s consent

What rights does FERPA provide?

  • Right to view student’s educational records

  • Right to request amendment of inaccurate or misleading records

  • Right to consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information

What is a student record?

A student record means any recorded information or data on a person who has attended or is attending The University of New Mexico.

 

What information is made public?

Public Information includes: name, address, e-mail address, phone number, date of birth, major, attendance dates, degrees, institution, sports, and athletic information. The online student directory only lists name, phone number, e-mail address, academic program, and year. Students may request that public information remain private in the online directory.

Deadlines

Programs set their own application deadlines within certain ranges. Check the corresponding program for specific deadlines. If you are an applicant living outside the U.S., you should mail all required application materials at least 30 days before the proposed department deadline to ensure sufficient time for your application to be processed for review.

Application Fee

You must submit an application fee of $50 when you apply. The application fee is not refundable. Fees are subject to change. The fee, made payable to the University of New Mexico, must be paid by credit card, International Postal Money Order or certified check drawn on a U.S. bank. Application fees cannot be waived nor transferred to future expenses or enrollment. Applications will not be reviewed for admission until the fee is received.

Applications and fees are applicable for one year (or four consecutive semesters. If you do not register for the semester requested on your application and wish to postpone enrollment to a subsequent semester, you must petition the specific program department for deferral of admission. If you do not enroll within that time period, a new application and fee are required.

Credit card payments can only be accepted if you are applying online.
