UNM Biomedical Research Education Programs : Prospective Students

BSGP Admission Requirements

  • BS, BA or equivalent from an accredited US institution or a recognized foreign institution.
  • Overall 3.00 GPA (also preferred in all science classes).
  • Prerequisite course work with a grade of "B" or higher:

    Biological Science 2 Semesters
    General Chemistry 2 Semesters
    Organic Chemistry 2 Semesters
    Biochemistry 1 Semester
    Physics 2 Semesters
    Calculus 1 Semester
  • GRE score must total 1000 or higher with a minimum score of 450 for each test and a 3.75 on the Analytical Writing Test. We do not require the Subject Test.
  • International students must take the TOEFL and score at least 92 on the internet-based, 237 on the computer-based, or 580 on the paper-based test.
  • Previous research or laboratory experience is highly desirable.

Admission to the graduate program is competitive and attainment of the above minimal requirements does not ensure admission to the program. The admissions process does, however, allow for consideration of students who may not have attained all of the above requirements but have otherwise demonstrated exceptional potential to succeed in graduate study.

MD/PhD Admission Requirements

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) encourages application from all interested students, regardless of their area of academic study. The minimum prerequisites requirements to apply to the School of Medicine are:

General biology or zoology (including labs) 8 semester hours
General Chemistry (including labs) 8 semester hours
Organic Chemistry (including labs) 8 semester hours
General Physics 6 semester hours
Biochemistry 3 semester hours

Combined organic chemistry/biochemistry courses are inadequate. The biochemistry course should be at the junior/senior level.

All of the prerequisites, except for organic chemistry labs (both I and II) and biochemistry, must be completed  prior to the submissions of the application. The organic chemistry labs and biochemistry prerequisites must be completed prior to matriculation.

All of the prerequisites must be completed with a letter grade of C or better (C- is not acceptable). Pass/Fail (CR/NC) grading is not accepted. Advance Placement (AP) Credit will be accepted for introductory Biology, Chemistry, or Physics only if college credit was granted by the institute. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Credit will be accepted as long as the applicant has the sufficient number of semester hours to fulfill the required prerequisites.

To receive consideration for the admissions process, applicants must have total numerical Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score of 22 or greater and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
