Biomedical Research Education Program : UNM Health Sciences Center

Apply to the BSGP

Admission Requirements

  • BS, BA or equivalent from an accredited US institution or a recognized foreign institution.
  • Overall 3.00 GPA (also preferred in all science classes).
  • Prerequisite course work with a grade of "B" or higher:

    Biological Science 2 Semesters
    General Chemistry 2 Semesters
    Organic Chemistry 2 Semesters
    Biochemistry 1 Semester
    Physics 2 Semesters
    Calculus 1 Semester
  • GRE score must total 1000 or higher with a minimum score of 450 for each test and a 3.75 on the Analytical Writing Test. We do not require the Subject Test.
  • International students must take the TOEFL and score at least 92 on the internet-based, 237 on the computer-based, or 580 on the paper-based test.
  • Previous research or laboratory experience is highly desirable.

Admission to the graduate program is competitive and attainment of the above minimal requirements does not ensure admission to the program. The admissions process does, however, allow for consideration of students who may not have attained all of the above requirements but have otherwise demonstrated exceptional potential to succeed in graduate study.

Applications for the MS and PhD Programs are accepted once per year.

Application Deadlines for the Fall Term:
Priority Deadline - December 1
Final Deadline - March 1

Applying to the program early is strongly encouraged. The application review process begins in mid-January and continues until June, or until all available positions are filled, whichever comes first. Complete applications received by the priority deadline will be considered in the first review sessions, and opportunities to visit our campus are primarily available to applicants who have submitted applications by the priority deadline. Applications received after December 1 must be completed no later than March 1 in order to move forward for review

Financial support packages are offered to highly-qualified first-year PhD students. Please keep in mind that early application (by December 1st) ensures consideration for these stipends. All PhD students and most MS students are funded by their Research Mentor, training grants, or the mentor's department after the first year.

April 15 Response Deadline:

PhD applicants that are offered admission and financial support are asked to accept or decline our offer, in writing, at their earliest convenience. However, the BSGP Admissions process complies with the Council of Graduate Schools
April 15 Resolution which states that those PhD students receiving financial assistance who have been made an offer of acceptance will not be required to respond before April 15. After this date, funded PhD slots will no longer be guaranteed to those students who have not responded.

Additionally, the CGS Resolution indicates that students have an obligation of commitment to the institution whose offer they accept. Acceptances maintained after April 15 are considered binding agreements that will be honored by both the student and the institution. Please feel free to contact us at bsgp@salud.unm.edu with any questions related to these guidelines.

Financial Support

Financial support packages are offered to highly qualified first-year PHD students. This package includes an annual stipend of $23,000 (2009-10 amount), student health insurance, tuition and most fees. Early application insures consideration for these stipends. After the first year, students are funded by their dissertation advisor, training grants, or the advisor's department.
