Overview of Graduate certificate programs are short, focused programs of study designed to give students advanced skills in a particular subject or area of specialization. They are generally one year in length, consist of 3-12 courses and range from 9-21 credits of advanced coursework. Credits earned can often be applied to a more advanced degree in a related field.
Students must have a bachelor's degree before applying for a graduate certificate program. UNM allows students to be enrolled in a graduate certificate program and a master's or doctoral program simultaneously. Some credits from the graduate certificate may also count toward the graduate degree.

TIP: In some cases, the credits earned while completing a graduate certificate online can be transferred later toward a graduate degree (this is not always the case, so check carefully if you want to use your certificate as the foundation for a graduate degree in the near future).
