Biomedical Research Education Program : UNM Health Sciences Center

  Welcome from the Assistant Dean

Dr. Deborah Helitzer, ScD
Assistant Dean for Research Education

Thank you for your interest in the UNM Biomedical Research Education Program! As the Assistant
Dean for Research in the School of Medicine, my role supports a large umbrella under which all of
the research education programs reside. These programs include the BSGP Masters and Doctoral
programs, the MD/PhD program, the Postdoctoral programs, the new Masters of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) and future research education programs.

One of my goals is to develop new research fellowship opportunities- hopefully eventually at least one in every signature research program. I want to facilitate the important goals of each of these training programs, to support all the program directors and to enable the respective Steering Committees or Curriculum Committees to carry out the work that they have been asked to do. I will also make recommendations to the School Of Medicine leadership about where to allocate available resources to best support each program.

I hope to encourage current and future program participants to "think outside of the box" about research education. We need to challenge ourselves to consider how our programs can meet the needs of future biomedical researchers whose long-term success will depend on having breadth of knowledge and skills to work in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams. One way we can achieve this is to focus on collaborative opportunities and define core competencies for all facets of research education.

I am always interested in learning how I can help to improve the student experience here at UNM and I'm sure you have many ideas about how the programs can best meet your expectations. If you would like to share any thoughts or ideas with me or any of the BREP staff, please feel free to contact us at the quick link to the left.

Sincerely,

Deborah
