Why Choose UNM?
Below you will find valuable information about the University of New Mexico
and its graduate programs.
Why UNM?
If you're considering
graduate school, you may be asking yourself two questions: Why pursue a graduate
degree? And where should you undertake a graduate program?
Why Pursue a Graduate Degree?
The answer is as individual as you are. It depends on your career
goals, academic interests, and financial resources.
It's quite simple: graduate degrees are the new bachelor's
degrees. The world is a competitive place, and anything you can do to help
yourself stand out will help. Fifty years ago, a bachelor's could help you do
that. But with over 10,000 small colleges, public universities, private schools
and for-profit institutions offering bachelor’s degrees, that is no longer the
case. For someone with drive and ambition, a graduate degree will help
distinguish you from the rest of the crowd, and the speed with which your career
advances will far outweigh the extra time you spent in school.
There are more advantages for you to attain your graduate degree like:
Career Advantages
- A graduate degree increases your competitiveness in the job
market - UNM’s doctoral students have found that the prestige of
a doctoral degree often opens the first door to interviews.

graduate degrees

graduate degrees
- America needs many more highly educated personnel in order

government)

those with bachelor’s degrees

Where Should You Undertake a Graduate Program?
Again, the answer depends upon you as an individual and particularly upon the
field in which you want to earn a degree.
As you weigh the merits of various graduate schools, however, consider that
the broad range of faculty expertise, course offerings, and research facilities
at UNM is difficult to equal elsewhere. UNM boasts a Nobel laureate, Fulbright
winners and national recognized teachers. A low student to faculty ratio means
many of your classes will be small, and your professor will make time for you.
Among UNM’s distinguished faculty nine are members elected to the prestigious
National Academy of Sciences. UNM contract and grants for FY 2005 grew to $295.4
million. We are one of four national universities chosen to share $12.8 million
in grants for Ph.D. students to study nanoscience and technology with
applications for cancer research. The Sevilleta Research Station at UNM is one
of 15 National Science Foundation summer research sites. A Carnegie
Research/Doctoral-Extensive university designation recognizes UNM as an
exceptional level of funded research and array of programs. UNM is also one of
only three Carnegie Extensive universities also designated as Hispanic-serving.
The National Cancer Institute designated our cancer research and treatment
center.
When students and researchers worldwide come to UNM to study with outstanding
scholars, they can also take advantage of the superior research facilities
available here. UNM’s graduate students conduct research in more than 100
different affiliated laboratories including Lovelace Respiratory Research
Institute and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Health Sciences Center has almost
half a billion dollars worth of facilities.
The Health Science Library and Information Center (HSLIC) is the only
federally-designated resource library to serve the health information needs of
New Mexico. It serves approximately 9,000, including faculty, students, staff
and preceptors across the state; services are available 24 hours a day via the
Internet; wireless provides network access throughout the library building. In
FY08, electronic materials were used 6.0 million times; print materials were
used more than 22,457 times; and over 7,000 reference transactions were
completed. HSLIC provides technology Support services including
email/calendaring, a Microsoft Office SharePoint Services collaboration system,
over 28 terabytes of centralized shared file space, and full-lifecycle support
for almost 3,500 desktop and laptop computers.
The UNM Campus
The campus stretches eastward from the center of Albuquerque (pop. 535,239)
towards a range of mountains that commands respect and adoration. Just north and
south of the campus are typical student communities, with shops, restaurants,
places of religious worship, and student housing. Nob Hill, a business area east
of campus, has a quirky magic all its own. There, you can find sidewalk vendors,
musicians and artists, retailers offering books, fashion, and high-tech
equipment, and an eclectic mix of coffeehouses, restaurants, and pubs serving
food and drink from around the world.
Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico is the state’s largest
university, serving more than 34,000 students. The UNM campus now has 300
facilities that reside on 789 acres. UNM is a city within a city with
performance venues, athletic facilities, museums, galleries, stores and eateries
as well as police, safety and utility departments.
When you need to get away, UNM’s location provides easy access to the
cultural and recreational offerings of central New Mexico. Santa Fe is a short
commute or a quick trip on Rail Runner, plus there is a free campus shuttle to
the nearest station. The scenic views of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains are
just minutes away. They feature popular trails for hikers, runners, and
cyclists. Albuquerque Parks and Recreation system has an extension park system
totaling at just over 300 parks including the Balloon Fiesta Park, home to the
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Many visitors cannot believe how many completely beautiful days Albuquerque
enjoys year round. We bask in 310 days of sunshine, blessed with a mild, dry
climate and four distinctly beautiful seasons. Very low humidity means that even
when temperatures rise, summer is always comfortable, and our sunny winters are
comparatively mild. Annual rainfall, most of which occurs between July and
October, averages about 9 inches.
Financing a UNM Education
Financial support packages are offered to highly qualified first-year PHD
students. This package includes an annual stipend of $23,000 (2009-10 amount),
student health insurance, tuition and most fees. Early application insures
consideration for these stipends. After the first year, students are funded by
their dissertation advisor, training grants, or the advisor's department.
Additional teaching, research, & fellowship opportunities exist
