MS and PhD Admission Requirements

Deadlines and Review Cycle

The priority deadline for applications is December 1, 2007 (for both domestic and international applications). Applying to the Program early is strongly encouraged.

Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2008. Only complete applications are reviewed. The application review process begins in late January and continues until June. Opportunities to visit our campus are primarily available to applicants who have submitted applications by the priority deadline.

Requirements

  • BS, BA or equivalent from an accredited U.S. institution, or a recognized foreign institution.

  • Prerequisites:

Biological Science

2 semesters

General Chemistry

2 semesters

Organic Chemistry

2 semesters

Biochemistry

1 semesters

Physics

2 semester

Calculus

1 semester

  • Overall 3.00 GPA (also preferred in all science classes)

  • GRE score must total a minimum 1500 (old score) or minimum 1000 and 3.75 on the written (new score). We do not require the Subject Test.

  • International students must take the TOEFL and score 580 on the paper-based or 237 on the computer based.

  • Previous research or laboratory experience is highly desirable.

Admission to the graduate program is competitive and attainment of the above minimal requirements does not ensure admission to the program. The admissions process does, however, allow for consideration of students who may not have attained all of the above requirements but have otherwise demonstrated exceptional potential to succeed in graduate study.

Financial Support

Financial support packages are offered to highly qualified first-year PHD students. This package includes an annual stipend of $23,000 (2007-08 amount), student health insurance, tuition and fees. Early application insures consideration for these stipends. After the first year, students are funded by their dissertation advisor, training grants, or the advisor's department.

To apply

  • Apply online or with a paper application through the Office of Graduate Studies

  • International applicants apply through the International Admissions

  • In addition, the following materials should be submitted directly to our Program (see our address below):

    • Letter of Intent: You must submit a letter of intent briefly describing your experience and objectives in undertaking graduate study in the biomedical sciences (max. 2 pages, typed, double-spaced).

    • Three letters of recommendation: Three letters of recommendation are required. Recommendations should use the form and should be submitted in a sealed envelope signed diagonally across the sealed envelope flap.

    • Coursework Documentation Form

    • GRE Scores: You must arrange to have your official GRE General Test scores sent directly to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Office by the test agency. (Institutional code = 4845 & Department code = 0609).

    • TOEFL scores for foreign applicants must be submitted.
