The New Mexico Lifestyle

New Mexico is a blend of ancient cultural traditions and striking environmental diversity. Since the time of Coronado’s exploration into the region searching for gold in 1541, many cultures, including Native American, Spanish, European, Mexican, African-American, Asian and others have blended creating the unique character you will find in New Mexico today.

New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the United States with 121,335 square miles. The opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation are as varied as the state's terrain. Our geography includes colorful mesas, extinct volcanoes, unusual rock formations and mountain peaks stretching to 13,000 feet covered in dense aspen and coniferous forests. These altitudes, coupled with New Mexico's light, fluffy snow and brilliant sunshine, create some of the finest ski and snowboarding conditions in the West. New Mexico also has approximately 20 million acres of forested land of which 8.5 million is designated as National Forest for the weekend sightseer or avid backcountry explorer. Ancient seas that once covered the land left behind fossil beds to explore throughout the state and few states can boast having six of the earth's seven climatic zones within its borders.
