History

The University of New Mexico Human Tissue Bank was developed by its director, Dr. Mark Becher in 2001-04, backed by Dr. Mary Lipscomb, (Chair of Pathology) and Dr. Cheryl Wilman, (Director of the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center). The Human Tissue Bank was granted IRB approval in early fall 2003, by the Human Research and Review Committee (HRRC). Dr. Vann Schaffner (Surgical Pathology) assumed the directorship July 1, 2004 and the name changed to the Human Tissue Repository, reflecting the research mission and to distinguish it from the University Hospital Tissue Bank, which is operated for clinical use.

Since then neoplastic and non-neoplastic specimens have been collected and cataloged. Numerous specimens have also been obtained from the Solid Tumor Facility Collection. The HTR has begun distributing tissue to individual researchers. The repository continues to work with researchers in an effort to develop tissue based research that reflects the unique population of New Mexico, the greater Southwest and the UNM HSC.

The HTR policies are developed under the guidance of the HSC Human Tissue Oversight Committee (HTOC), which reports to the Office of Research. The UNM Human Tissue Repository is co-funded by the Department of Pathology and The Cancer Research and Treatment Center.
