Operative experience accrued during this fellowship will not apply toward certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Fellow responsibilities include active direct participation in the clinical, scholastic and educational activities of the Division. Fellow responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Clinical Activities:

  • Assisting in the operating room
  • Progressive supervised participation as a surgeon
  • Pulmonary and esophageal endoscopy
  • Direct responsibilities in pre and postoperative patient management
  • On call assignments alternating with the thoracic resident
Scholastic Activities:
  • Participation in different research projects sponsored by the faculty of the Division
  • Independent development and implementation of research protocols
  • Writing of abstracts, manuscripts, review articles and book chapters
  • Publication or presentation at professional society meetings
Educational Activities:

  • Attendance at courses in computer use, statistics, and research planning
  • Clinical rotations through the esophageal function laboratory, echocardiography service and the cardiac catheterization laboratory
  • Basic training in extracorporeal circulation

Fellows will be appointed at the PGY 5 level and will receive the same fringe benefits as residents. Applicants for this position should have completed a general residency or equivalent training abroad. Foreign medical school graduates must be ECFMG certified. This fellowship provides intensive exposure to all aspects of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in a clinically and educationally rich environment. The experience is especially suitable for individuals waiting to enter a Thoracic Surgery residency.

We will start accepting applications after December 1, 2005.

Please Note: Foreign medical school graduates must be ECFMG certified.
