Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOpportunitiesCombined Clinical and Research Fellowship in Cardiovascular SurgeryThe Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of New Mexico is seeking applications for a combined clinical and research fellowship from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. We will begin accepting applications for this position in December 2005. Applicants should have completed a general surgery residency. This experience is especially suitable for individuals waiting to enter a Thoracic Surgery residency. This is a one-year fellowship for highly motivated individuals with interest in clinical training experience and clinical research related to thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Fellows are expected to interact closely with the thoracic surgery resident. Even though this fellowship is not ACGME accredited, selected candidates are expected to perform and to function in accordance with the guidelines and criteria described in the Program requirements for residency education in Thoracic Surgery. Operative experience accrued during this fellowship will not apply toward certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Fellow responsibilities include active direct participation in
the clinical, scholastic and educational activities of the Division.

Fellows will be appointed at the PGY 5 level and will receive the same fringe benefits as residents. Applicants for this position should have completed a general residency or equivalent training abroad. Foreign medical school graduates must be ECFMG certified. This fellowship provides intensive exposure to all aspects of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in a clinically and educationally rich environment. The experience is especially suitable for individuals waiting to enter a Thoracic Surgery residency. We will start accepting applications after December 1, 2005.
