It has only this morning come to my attention that Sharon Wehrle is retiring from the University and from the Department of Surgery. Having known Sharon since the day that I hired her, she has been a special person for the Department and for me personally. She fulfilled all that I could ask of her in her work. She was always a source of fresh ideas. When the political and administrative turbulence became excessive, she was always a source of comfort and consolation. I have always counted Sharon among the elite core of wonderful administrative staff within the Department that made it possible for me to come to work every day and withstand the heat that came from many different directions within the institution.
As I was leaving UNM, Sharon was faced with the greatest of personal challenges with respect to her own health. I talked with Sharon by telephone before the operation, in her hospital room immediately following the procedure, and at intervals since. It has not been surprising that she has demonstrated great courage in meeting the challenge. I find great personal inspiration in continuing to have her as a person friend.
Thus, she is turning the page in the book of life and going on to the next chapter by retiring at this time. May God’s grace and her continued courage give her many more chapters to follow.
