Division of Dental Services

The University of New Mexico, Division of Dental Services began in 1999 with the mission to provide quality preventive-based patient care in an educational environment, and be a dental public health resource center for information and education concerning community-based dental programs throughout the state of New Mexico. Currently there are five faculty dental providers on staff. Clinical care emphasizes treatment to underserved populations in various public health arenas.

In our commitment to the citizens of New Mexico, the UNM Division of Dental Services developed a one year postdoctoral Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency July 2004. Five dental residents are accepted into this program. The UNM AEGD Program provides the best possible educational, clinical, and scientific environment for dental graduates to further their education through the provision of advanced level of comprehensive oral health care. This program considers the needs of communities, medically compromised, and special needs populations to further expand the knowledge base of recent graduates.

The residency program has many unique features making it a hybrid between an AEGD residency and a GPR. The majority of patient care takes place at our UNM Northeast Heights Dental Practice facility away from the medical center that has the look and feel of a private dental practice. On the other hand, residents experience aspects of hospital dentistry through inpatient hospital consultations, coverage of the emergency room, and treating dental patients in the operating room. Meanwhile, this experience takes place while living in beautiful and sunny New Mexico and the Southwest with an abundance of cultural and outdoor activities.

If you have questions concerning the program or require additional information, please contact the UNM Division of Dental Services by calling or e-mail Dr. Peter M. Jensen.
