All dental residents will spend a one-week period on rotation in the Emergency Department at University Hospital. The resident will be present from 12 PM until 6:00 PM. The resident will spend time with the Emergency Department attendings and residents, helping and observing the delivery of emergency care.
Consultation requests from all departments of the hospital are increasing in number. Currently up to 3-5 consultations at University Hospital are received by the dental services per week. The resident is exposed to patients with a broad range of medical and emotional problems on the consultation service and works closely with other health professionals.
The Division of Dental Services has one day per week of scheduled block time in the operating room at University Hospital. Each resident will be assigned to this rotation for a two-month period with faculty who admit patients for treatment in the operating room under general anesthesia. The dental resident under the supervision of the attending faculty will become comfortable with operating room protocol and perform all those duties related to admission and pre- and post operative care.
All dental residents spend a one-week rotation on ENT. During this rotation, the dental resident is expected to be present for morning and evening rounds with the ENT residents and attendings. The resident will interact with ENT both in the operating room and in outpatient clinical settings.
Carrie Tingley Hospital and the Los Lunas Dental Clinics are facilities dedicated to patients with special needs. Each resident will spend at least 40 hours between these two facilities treating special needs dental patients on an outpatient basis.
Residents can elect to have a rotation in this rural area of eastern New Mexico. The dental clinic is housed at the University of Eastern New Mexico-Roswell and patients are also treated in the operating room at Eastern new Mexico Medical Center. Living arrangements are provided for the resident.
