General SurgeryGeneral Surgery Resident Program
The University of New Mexico General Surgery Residency Program is a fully accredited program that finishes four chief residents per year. Our program has attracted outstanding applicants from all over the country. We are located in beautiful Albuquerque, New Mexico, with its unique tri-cultural population, outstanding weather, and unlimited outdoor recreational opportunities. Our medical school is the only med school in the state, and our University Hospital is the only level 1 trauma center in the state. Our program strengths include trauma/critical care, laparoscopic surgery, oncologic surgery, pediatric surgery, and endovascular surgery. There are no competing fellowships in any of these areas. All rotations at the PGY4 and PGY5 levels are at the chief level, ie. the senior resident is the chief of the service. Residents rotate to University of New Mexico Hospital, Albuquerque Veteran's Administration Hospital, and two private institutions: Lovelace Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital. Finishing residents usually get their number one pick for a fellowship or job. Currently about 55% of residents continue on to fellowships. Our pass rates for both written and oral exams are excellent. All residents HOI - HOIV are required to work with a faculty mentor and present a research project at our Annual Research Day each year. While we do not have a mandatory research year for our residents, those residents who wish to take a year off to do research are supported in this pursuit.
