Patient Care Facilities

UNM Hospital
University of New Mexico Hospital is the primary teaching institution for our program. It is an ACS verified Trauma Center, with 433 beds. The hospital is the only Level I trauma center in the state, and receives pediatric, complex general surgery and vascular surgery referrals as well. It serves broad range of patients, including the indigent members of our community though financial support from the tax payers of Bernalillo County. The diverse ethnicity of our state’s population is reflected in the significant numbers of Hispanic and Native American patients. Trauma resuscitations are run by the Trauma faculty and senior resident on the trauma rotation with assistance by Emergency Medicine faculty and residents, with supervision by trauma faculty also boarded in critical care medicine.

Construction will begin this year on the 400,000 square foot Children's and Critical Care Pavilion located adjacent to University Hospital. This $163,000,000 facility will contain new adult and pediatric emergency rooms, the trauma center, pediatric acute care, pediatric ICU, pediatric surgery and all adult critical care.

UNMH recently opened the Outpatient Surgical and Imaging Services. This modern 38,000 square foot building has its six operating rooms, radiological imaging and a pain clinic. Our faculty frequently schedule routine, outpatient surgeries at OSIS and provide junior residents experience with fundamental surgeries.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Our integrated institution is the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. It is a very busy tertiary referral hospital in the VA system for general surgery and vascular surgery. It serves veterans and has 187 beds. Residents at the VAMC receive a broad range general surgery experience with a significant number of vascular surgery cases as well.

Presbyterian Hospital and Lovelace Medical Center
Our two affiliated institutions are Presbyterian Hospital and Lovelace Medical Center. Presbyterian Hospital is a large private practice hospital with 453 beds and offers a high volume of major general surgery cases, including operative experience with board certified colorectal surgeons. Lovelace Medical Center is a 187 bed HMO hospital that serves as the main referral hospital for the Sandia Health System. This institution gives our residents a significant advanced laparoscopic, general surgery, vascular surgery and thoracic surgery experience in a managed care environment.
