The general surgery program allows residents to take on increased responsibility for patient care early in their training, partly due to the absence of fellows at our institution. Interns rotate through the surgical ICU as well as see consults in the emergency department. R2's are the mid-level resident on their services and are expected to operate. The R3's perform trauma resuscitations and gain considerable experience in pediatric surgery. The R4's as well as the R5's are the chief resident on their rotations.
Night call at UNM Hospital is covered by our 'night float' service in the Emergency Surgery Service from 5pm to 6am on Sunday through Thursday nights. Weekend call is covered via rotation of the residents from the day services.
