Orientations: New Student & Faculty

Teacher & Educational Development plays an integral role in the orientation of new students and faculty, providing orientees with a grounding in the history  and model of education at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and  an opportunity to develop and refine skills and identify resources.

New Student Orientation:

Orientation for new medical students is conducted yearly the first week in August. Teacher & Educational Development’s segment is designed to help prepare students to participate effectively in the problem-based learning tutorial process.

The agenda includes:

• Introductions and Ground Rules
• Starting a Case
• Hypotheses vs. Diagnoses
• Exploring Mechanisms
• Developing Learning Issues
• Discussing Learning Issues
• Completing a Case
• Group and Self Assessment

New Faculty Orientation:

Orientation for new faculty ("Quick Start") is generally conducted four times a year through the Office of Academic Affairs. As part of the orientation process, Teacher & Educational Development facilitates an interactive seminar on "Education at UNM SOM."

The objectives for this session are that participants will be able to:
• Explain history of UNM SOM
• Describe the UNM SOM model of education
• Explain four steps to effective teaching
• Identify teaching opportunities available to faculty members
• Identify resources available to support faculty educational growth and development
