Description: Recent literature on educational theory and
research provides evidence of a significant evolution in thinking
about how people learn. By and large, the way we design and teach
our curricular units has not kept up with these advances—many
educators continue to focus on “covering” content rather than
facilitating learning in both course design and implementation. This
workshop is intended to answer the question, “How can we design
courses to create ‘significant learning experiences’ (Fink,
2003)—ones that stimulate, inspire, and facilitate knowledge,
understanding, application, transfer, and transformation; ones in
which learners are actively involved, there is a high level of
energy, and significant and lasting changes of value occur?”
Participants will be actively engaged in an evidence-based framework
and step-by-step guidelines for designing curricular units.
Target Audience:
MD, PhD, PA-C, PT, OT, PharmD, Other.
All faculty who design curricula—blocks, units, clerkships, courses,
….
Objectives:
After this session, participants should be able to:
1. Foundational Knowledge
• Describe major elements of an evidence-based curriculum
development structure
• Identify critical elements and potential pitfalls of curriculum
design
2. Application.
• Develop objectives that create significant learning experiences,
based on Fink’s
taxonomy.
• Apply workbook guidelines for each step in the curriculum design
process.
3. Integration
• Integrate new learning with what you already know about curriculum
design,
your style, and your particular content and venues.
4. The Human Dimension
• Critically reflect on your own philosophy of teaching, what impact
you hope to
have, and the methods you have used and will use in the future to
achieve that
impact.
5. Caring
• Commit to designing a curriculum that incorporates advances in
thinking about
how people learn and therefore creates significant learning
experiences.
6. Learning How to Learn
• Identify what you know and what you still need to learn about
effective
curriculum design.
• Develop an action plan to implement desired changes and continue
learning.
