2009 American Telemedicine Association (ATA) Conference, Center for Telehealth Highlights
Dr. Dale Alverson, Director of the Center for Telehealth
and Cybermedicine Research at UNM Health Sciences Center, became
President-elect of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA)
at the Annual International Meeting and Exposition held in Las Vegas,
April 26-28, 2009, where he was also inducted into the ATA College of Fellows.
At the International ATA meeting UNM medical student, Monica Moya (MS 2010) presented
the research done in collaboration with fellow medical student Jessica Valdez,
on “The Impact of a Telehealth Web-based Solution for Neurosurgery Triage and Consultation”,
which had been one of eight nominated for the ATA student paper award.

ATA Institutional Award
The University of New Mexico’s Center for Telehealth and
Cybermedicine
Research was honored by the prestigious American
Telemedicine Association (ATA) President’s Institutional Award 2007 in
recognition of its contributions to the development and advancement of
telemedicine worldwide. The award, sponsored by AMD Telemedicine, was
given at the ATA National Conference in Nashville on May 14, 2007.

The Center for Telehealth is a leader and integral partner in the
improvement of the health and wellness of the communities we serve.
Mission
The Center for Telehealth will continue to develop visible and
sustainable Telehealth networks delivering demonsratable health care
services and benefits to the underserved in New Mexico, nationally, and
internationally.
Goals
- Foster Telehealth alliances and collaborative activities
- Incubate new Telehealth programs and applications
- Provide strategic and operational support to Telehealth users
- Coordinate Telehealth services across UNM HSC departments and partners
- Participate with UNM HSC departments in research, evaluation, and analysis of Telehealth technologies, programs, and impact on health
outcomes
- Educate healthcare professionals on Telehealth policy implementation and operations
- Assist UNM HSC programs and partners to provide healthcare service to customers, primarily underserved populations
- Advance the development of sustainable Telehealth networks
- Promote sharing of resources and appropriate redundancy to obtain economy of scale, ensure interoperability of systems
- Facilitate the collaborative use of Telehealth to address global health issues
- Raise the awareness of the value of Telehealth
