Removing Unnecessary Files from the Web Server

We often find folders that contain a large number of images and other types of files that are not necessary on the web server. Some of these file types are:

The above file types are not recognized by browsers. If you want to provide downloadable versions of print material, please PDF files. Video files should be stored on our media server. Contact Kevin Wiley for more information.

The production web server is neither a scratch working area nor a deparmental storage device. The web server is for materials that are served by our server and this means materials that are for use by visitors to our web sites, either external visitors or HSC staff.

Disk Space

Most of the web sites at the HSC do not require more than, say, 10 MB of disk space. We will be contacting web authors whose disk space usage is higher than 10 MB to discuss this. If you have a legitimate storage need, you won't have a problem. Otherwise, we will ask you to do some clean up in your web area.

Image File Size

To promote acceptable download speeds, image files should be kept to a maximum size of around 75 KB. Most images can be optimized to requires less space, but in some specific instances you might need an image file larger than 75 KB

Removing Unnecessary Files

There are many reasons to remove unnecessary files. Reducing the time required for a tape back up of the server being one of the most important. Another reason is that having folders without a lot of unnecessary stuff in them makes it easier to work on your web site.

The HSC Web Team will periodically remove unnecessary files from the web server. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Kevin Wiley at kwiley@salud.unm.edu .
