Overview of HSC Web Effort
Defined Roles
- HSC Web Administrator: coordinates overall effort with the different HSC components and departments. Also manages the HSC Web Team. The Web Administrator is Kevin Wiley, kwiley@salud.unm.edu
- Site Manager: person who is in charge of a component web site or intranet. Not all components have a site manager.
- HSC Web Team: Defines navigation, graphical and layout standards. The web team also assists departmental web authors with their web site development, works with professors to post course materials for academic courses and develops database applications.
- Web Authors: departmental employee who creates and maintains departmental web sites.
- Content Owner: the person who is responsible for the accuracy of a web site’s content. May or may not be the same person as the web author.
Overview of HSC Web Site
- Web site is the largest HSC publication.
- Site consists of over 150 individual sites and over 3000 pages.
- Over 8,400,000 page views in the fiscal year ’03-’04. This is an increase of 2,500,000 over the previous fiscal year.
- There are over 100 web authors who work on departmental sites.
- Main URL is http://hsc.unm.edu
Top Priorities of Web Authors
“Assume that people who come to your web site are on a fact finding mission.”
- a presenter at a recent web usability conference.
- Content on any page needs to be current and accurate.
- Individual page layout must be “scannable” – easy to read and locate information. Examples: http://hsc.unm.edu/about/moreabout.shtml
- Departmental contact information should be on the home page if possible.
- Site navigation should be tested and usable.
