Graphical Standards

UNM Health Sciences Center web sites should adhere to the following graphical standards. Standards are important in promoting UNM and HSC branding, providing consistency for the visitors to our web sites and maintaing a high level of presentation. Some of these standards are discussed in the HSC Web Development Policy.

The graphcial standards for HSC web sites are covered in more detail in the Web Author class.

Page Headers

All web pages must use an approved navigation bar. The navigation bar at the top of this page is one of those approved navigation bars. There are only six approved navigation bars, one each for the HSC, School of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, Cancer Research and Treatment Center, College of Nursing and UNM Hospitals. All other departments and programs must use one the navigation bar that reflect their organizational affiliation.

Page Footers

All web sites on the main HSC web server (hsc.unm.edu) must use the standard HSC page footer, seen at the bottom of this page.

Layouts

Pages should use a simple layout that is easily scanned by people who come to the page. The HSC templates promote simple layouts and scannability.

Fonts
Photos and Other Images

The main thing to remember is to limit the image size to what is absolutely necessary, both in pixel dimensions the size of the file in bytes.

The HSC does not advocate the use of drop shadows or other effects on photos. These effects take time to produce and are very difficult to reproduce in exactly the same manner across a large number of web pages maintained by a large number of different people. Inconsistent use of image effects makes the web site look inconsistent and unprofessional.
